Oklahoma County Jail Inmate Lost for Almost 8 Months!

REMEMBER THESE HEADLINES FROM SHERIFFWATCH.ORG LAST MONTH?!

Both Judge Truong and Commissioner Calvey are concerned that Sheriff Taylor may have something to hide.

I don’t know what he’s hiding… He appears not to want any oversight.” – District 3 County Commissioner Kevin Calvey

There was a reason why we were there. We were concerned because there are people in there that aren’t supposed to be in there… We wanted to make sure that everybody was accounted for.” – District Judge Cindy Truong

One such person waiting inside the Oklahoma County Jail was 49 year old Charles E. Lemons. Arrested on a Saturday, July 21 2018, Lemons should have been arraigned by video the following Monday. He slipped through the cracks.

Lemons is alleged of violating his probation and has not been charged. Lemons was homeless and living in Oklahoma City prior to his arrest; he was required to check in with OCPD weekly and is accused of missing an appointment. After months of pleaing with other Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office employees inside the jail, Lemons confided in one of the jail’s mental health professionals who immediately alerted court officials.

I just sat there.

I told several of the officers – what they call rovers – that ‘I don’t have a court date. When am I going to court?’ And they said, “That’s not my job.‘”

-Lemons told the Oklahoman.

Oklahoma County Commissioner Kevin Calvey sought last month to do his own check of the inmates after hearing accounts of lost inmates. He showed up at the jail on a Saturday morning with District Judge Cindy Truong and 16 others, including Valley Brook police officers. The sheriff stopped the check because of security concerns. The sheriff complained afterward he wasn’t given proper notice of Calvey’s intentions.

This would have been uncovered a month ago if we had been allowed to do it.

There are ongoing problems with the management of the jail.

I think we need, obviously, to have more oversight of the sheriff’s office.
